Somalia: President issues statement as parliament give vote of confidence to New Prime Minister

The President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has issued a statement thanking members of the House of the People of Somalia for their unanimous approval of Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre today.

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the House of the People of the Federal Parliament of Somalia for accepting the appointment of Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre, who I have already selected for his knowledge and leadership skills for the priority of our country,” A statement from Villa Somalia said.

Hassan Sheikh also issued a strong message to the prime minister, calling for the formation of a government that can save the country from the current situation.

“I urge Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre to form a government that will work to strengthen security, drought relief, infrastructure development, social services, reconciliation, complete the constitutional review, strengthen governance, and improve diplomatic relations with the world,” reiterated in a statement from the office of the President of Somalia.

Finally, he called on the Somali people to support the new Prime Minister in fulfilling his constitutional responsibilities, and wished him well in his new role.

The new prime minister was given a vote of confidence by 220 lawmakers in the quorum, and no lawmaker abstained, according to Speaker of Parliament Sheikh Aden Madobe.

However, Hamza Abdi Barre has become Somalia’s 21st prime minister, and he is expected to form his government and return it to the Somali federal parliament for approval of the new cabinet.
