Ali Duale becomes member of Nova Scotia Parliament

Ali Duale, a Somali-Canadian citizen, has won a seat in the Canadian Parliament in Nova Scotia.

Ali Duale, who fled to Canada as a refugee, became the first Muslim to become a member of the Nova Scotia State Legislature, and the first Somali man in a historic election victory.

The former Somali firefighter received overwhelming support in the Halifax Armdale constituency, receiving 40.2% of the vote.

Ali Duale is the fourth in a election where three other black candidates won seats in their election,’s the highest number of black-Canadians ever to serve in the Nova Scotia state legislature.

Ali Duale joins many other Somalis in the diaspora, especially based in Canada and the United States, who have become members of parliaments, both at the state and federal levels.
