Lawmaker Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur (Sheikh Adan Madobe) has been elected as the new speaker of Somalia’s lower house of parliament, following a long and tumultuous election.

Lawmaker Sheikh Aden Madobe defeated lawmaker Hassan Abdinur in the last round of elections.

Sheikh Aden Madobe’s victory puts an end to more than a year of uncertainty in the country, and means that the two legislative bodies are now established and have chairpersons.

The victory marks a victory for the opposition and the reformist movement against President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, who he and his faction have strongly supported Hassan Abdinur.

Sheikh Adan Madobe was a member of the Himilo party led by Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, but his victory was facilitated by the Union of Candidates and some regional presidents, particularly Ahmed Madobe and Said Deni.

This is Aden Madobe’s second term in office, having also served as speaker of parliament from January 31, 2007 to May 25, 2010.

The election took more than five hours, and came hours after a stalemate over the election of elected members of parliament in Elwak, where pro-Villa Somalia lawmakers refused to attend.

Finally, the 16 MPs elected in Elwaq were excluded from the voting due to lack of ID cards.

Aden Madobe’s victory has other political consequences, as it is expected to pave the way for lawmakers elected in Elwak to become members of Parliament shortly.

Meanwhile, The interim speaker of Somalia’s lower house of parliament has announced that the election of the two vice-speakers has been postponed until tomorrow morning.

“We are informing the esteemed parliamentarians that the election of the deputy speaker of the parliament cannot be held tonight, as it is the month of Ramadan and we are tired, and it will be held tomorrow at 11:00 am and the lawmakers are expected to gather here,” the interim speaker said.
