2 min read
Various reports are emerging of casualties from a suicide attack in General Dhaga Badan camp in Medina District, Mogadishu.
The blast was reportedly carried out by a suicide bomber who targeted young recruits lining up for training at the camp.
Credible sources also told media that the blast took place at the front gates of the camp, as new soldiers were in line queuing.
The suicide bomber was also said to have impersonated the young men who wanted to enlist in the army and then blew himself up as soon as when he entered the queue.
According to early reports, there are casualties including deaths and injuries as a result of the blast and rescue efforts are underway for the injured soldiers. Reports also say that the blast killed at least 10 people and injured many more.
There was no immediate word from Somali security officials with more details of the attack this morning in General Dhegabadan camp in Medina District of Mogadishu.
Security forces also arrived at the scene and closed the camp and immediate area.
The explosion comes after there were security alerts earlier this month indicating that Al Shabab militants had entered the city to undertake in suicide missions ahead of the upcoming elections in Somalia.
Al-Shabaab suicide bombers have been on the rise in Mogadishu in recent months after government forces cracked down on improvised explosive device (IED) vehicles entering the city.
