The father of Sir David Amess’s suspected killer has told the Sunday Times British newspaper that he was “shocked” by his son’s arrest at the scene of the MP’s stabbing.

Harbi Ali Kullane, a former adviser to past Somali Prime Ministers – confirmed that his 25-year-old son, a British citizen, is now in police custody. Harbi also said that Scotland Yard’s anti-terrorism police had visited his sister’s house in north London.

Kullane said “I feel very shocked. It was not something I expected or even dreamed of. ”

Police are now investigating the Essex attack as a terrorist incident, possibly linked to extremism.

Meanwhile, mourning was held for the slain lawmaker with candles laid at the scene of the attack, to commemorate the life of Sir David.

The suspect is currently being held at Essex Police Station, where he will be interrogated by the Anti-Terrorism Police Department.

The Somali Organisations and Community Leaders in the UK have released a statement condemning the attack and sending condolences to the family of Sir David Amess.

“We express our deepest sympathy and condolences to Sir David Amess’s family, loved ones and his constituents. Everyone who knew Sir David Amess described him as ‘one of the kindest, most compassionate, and a distinguished public servant’ who committed and devoted to serving his community.

Sir David Amess promoted our shared values of tolerance, love and respect that make Britain so great” the statement read.

Police may detain the man until Tuesday before prosecuting him, or releasing him.
