Galmudug Danab commander killed in Guriel clashes

Ahlu Sunna forces have tonight recaptured the town of Gur’el in Galgadud region, after heavy fighting broke out earlier this afternoon.

The fighting had lasted since this afternoon, with both sides suffering casualties.

The officers have so far been confirmed dead include Danab Galmudug Force Commander Major Abdilatif Feyfle, and the deaths of other officers from both sides have been reported, although no official figures have been released.

The fighting took place this afternoon when Ahlu-Sunna, which was defeated in today’s battle, received an army contingent led by MP Sadiq Sheikh Yusuf Dired, who entered Gur’el from the north.

The central police station, the district headquarters and most of the key areas of the town have fallen to Ahlu-Sunna, and government forces have withdrawn from the eastern part of the town according to local media.

Reports from Guri-el also indicate that Ahlu Sunna has taken a large number of prisoners, although no exact figures are available.
