Gunmen and their vehicle seized on the outskirts of Mogadishu

More details are emerging from a planned attack and direct fighting last night in Hawa Abdi area on the outskirts of Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, according to various reports.

The attack was reportedly carried out by Al-Shabaab fighters who targeted a checkpoint controlled by specially trained Somali forces and who also are protecting the construction of the Mogadishu-Afgoye Highway.

Credible sources also said the attack was followed by a brief skirmish between security forces and the gunmen with the Haramad Special Forces defending the post against the ambush. 

Police say they have arrested three of the attackers and NOHA vehicle was seized in the process by security forces.

The officials added that further investigations are underway into the men, who have been disarmed and arrested by government security agencies.

Local residents say the situation is now calm this morning, and the Haramad Somali forces have launched a security operations in the nearby area.

Mogadishu has been rocked by insecurity in the past few weeks, most of which have been targeted assassinations and suicide bomb attacks.

This comes at a time when Somalia is entering a general election, both parliamentary and presidential.
