Iraqi man kills Somali girl after she rejects love affair

A Somali woman has been killed in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The young woman, identified as Dahabo Omar, was killed not far from her former job at a restaurant by an Iraqi man who had repeatedly tried have a relationship with her in which she refused.

Mahmoud Abdullahi Bille, a Somali student studying in Malaysia who spoke to media, said the girl had been reluctant to have relationship with him.

“Dahabo was killed by a restaurant colleague, according to previous reports from the Somali community after she refused to contact him, and he threatened to kill her several times,” he said.

The girl’s death was reported to the Somali embassy in Malaysia, and embassy officials met with police handling her case, which is still under investigation.

“The embassy is working closely with the community and the police to address this issue, and we are always committed to serving and assisting the plight of Somalis in Malaysia in whatever way they need,” said Amal Mohamed Said, a staff member of the Somali Embassy in Malaysia.

Dahabo is said to be in her twenties, one of the few people who worked at the restaurant, in which eventually was to be the place she would meet her killer.

Police launched a hunt and arrested the 25-year-old suspect in Ampang Putra a few hours later, said Ampang Jaya district police chief Farouk Eshak.

“The man holds a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) card,” he said in a statement.

“We also seized a knife believed to have been used by the suspect in the incident,” Farouk said, adding that the suspect was being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

Police were also investigating the motive for the murder.

According to Farouk, the 28-year-old victim had been living with the suspect’s family for nine years.

He added that a medical officer had confirmed that the victim had tested positive for Covid-19.
