Kismayo, the capital of the Lower Jubba region, is undergoing final preparations for the upcoming Somali Upper House elections, which will take place in the coming hours.
Jubbaland lawmakers, members of state and federal election commissions are flocking to the site for the election of new senators.
Up to nine members are running in this round of election, contesting for four of the eight senatorial seats in the Upper House from the Jubbaland administration.
The nine candidates, including a woman, will also address the Jubbaland Committee for House of Representatives today, after which voting will begin to select new Jubbaland senators.
Jubbaland will be the first regional administration to begin elections in the selection of new senators for the Somali Upper House of Parliament.
Security has also been tightened, with security forces in the city and its environs conducting security operations.
With exception of Jubbaland, some federal regional authorities have still to name electoral commission committee’s which has resulted to the delay in the timetable for the election of the Upper House across the country.
