Marian Abdi Hussein, a ethnic Somali woman, made history and became the first Somali-born member of the Norwegian parliament last night.
Marian Abdi has become the first Muslim woman to appear in the Norwegian legislature wearing a hijab after becoming a member of the House.
Prior to her political career, Marian was the chairperson of the Somali Student Forening Society (SSF), with one of the founding members including the former Somali Prime Minister Hassan Ali Kheyre.
In a statement, Hassan Kheyre congratulated Marian Abdi Hussein on her victory, as she became the first Somali member of parliament in Norway.
“To the new parliamentarian and to all Somalis in Norway, I congratulate you on Marian historic victory,” said former Somali Prime Minister Hassan Ali Kheyre in a tweet.
