Mogadishu: Al Shabab terrorist group storm Hayat Hotel; Casualties feared

Reports from Mogadishu state that a strong explosion took place early this evening in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia.

Preliminary details that we received say that Al-Shabaab militants launched an attack on Hayat Hotel at the Km4 intersection.

According to witnesses, heavy gunfire can be heard inside the hotel, and government forces have arrived at the scene.

It is not known the number of Al-Shabaab militants who launched the attack or the damage caused by the attack.

Meanwile, a brief statement released to the media by Al Shabab says that its fighters entered the Hayat Hotel.

Al-Shabaab media also said that another explosion targeted police officers near the CID headquarters, who were on their way to the scene as a rescue, and that there were casualties.

In addition to Al-Shabaab’s claim, at least three explosions, two of which were confirmed to be a car and a suicide bomber, took place at Hayat Hotel.

After that, heavily armed men entered the hotel and their number has not yet been identified.

Strong government troops support have arrived at the scene, and an operation is underway to end the siege, with gunshots and bomb explosions still being heard as the sides exchange each other.

There are heavy casualties although no official numbers are available yet as this is an ongoing direct attack that the security forces are curently dealing with.
