The federal government of Somalia has issued a warning to the companies that provide the service of ships (Ship Agents), after strong complaints from Somali business community.

The Ministry of Ports and Maritime Transport has warned the companies that provide shipping services, not to share information about the products brought to the country with the Al-Shabaab group, which in recent years has been levying taxes on commercial shipments from the Port of Mogadishu.

A press release issued by the ministry has also instructed the companies operating in the port that those who are found in such acts will be recognized as directly supporting Al-Shabaab.

“The ministry, while fulfilling its duties, has shared the complaints of the citizens with the security agencies so that they can conduct a comprehensive investigation,” said the statement issued by the ministry.

It is also stated in the statement issued by the ministry that those who are found in this matter will be swiftly deal with measures such as work ban and confiscation of their business.

This warning comes after some of the business community in the country filed a complaint against the companies that provide the services of the ships (Shipping Agents) who share the information of the products they bring to the country with the Al-Shabaab group, and who in return impose taxes on the businesses.

The federal government of Somalia has already banned businesses from paying bribes to the Al-Shabaab group, during the ongoing insurgency against the group.
