Mogadishu: Suicide bomber targets government spokesman

More details are emerging from a recent explosion inside the Somali capital Mogadishu, particularly on the busy Maka Al-Mukarramah Road, which has caused various casualties.

The blast reportedly took place between the Dabka and Shaqalaha intersections in Mogadishu.

Somali Police Force spokesman Abdifatah Adan said in a statement that the blast was carried out by a suicide bomber and targeted Somali government spokesman Mohamed Ibrahim Moalim.

Abdifatah also said police would provide details of the casualties in the blast.

The government spokesman was seriously injured and taken to hospital, sources said.

Relief efforts are also underway for those affected by the blast, and ambulances are evacuating the injured.

The situation at the scene was tense and security forces arrived and closed the area.
