Government Security Minister Abdullahi Mohamed Nur said last night until this morning that outgoing President Farmajo had tried to stage a coup but failed.

Abdullahi Mohamed Nur added that forces under Farmajo’s command attacked the Prime Minister’s Office and part of the Cabinet but were fortunately opposed by some presidential guards and army commanders.

“There are still a small number of troops involved in the coup who are unknown at this time,” he said, calling on the army to defend the government and protect the property of the Somali people.

Government Security Minister Abdullahi Mohamed has threatened with action against anyone involved in the failed coup.

Meanwhile, Somalia’s defense minister has called on the country’s armed forces not to take orders from the outgoing president and not to be caught in the crossfire.

“Individuals with vested interests should not be under the command of the military. We order all armed forces, wherever they are, to serve the people and not to allow this country to be destroyed,” he said.

According to the Minister of Security, “there was a failed coup d’état in the country today. The coup was orchestrated by former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo,” said Minister Jama.

The minister said that Farmajo’s decision was prompted by the fact that he was looting the election and sent a stern warning to government forces.

He added that there were still a small number of troops involved in the coup and threaten to take action against anyone involved in the failed coup.
