The Federal Independent Electoral Team (FIET) has announced that the election of some members of parliament from the northern regions of Somaliland will take place in Mogadishu today.

Ahmed Aden Dagaal (Ahmed Safina), a spokesman for the commission, told state media that preparations are underway for the election of six seats in Somaliland, which will take place on Tuesday at the Aficio tent, former Somali Airforce base.

The spokesman also said that Galmudug is in the process of registering candidates for the five constituencies in Dhusamareb, where 11 candidates have so far registered.

Ahmed Safina said Galmudug’s registration deadline on Monday had been extended by one day, and that the five-seat election would take place after Tuesday.

A spokesman for the commission also said that the election process issued by the commission imposed strict conditions on candidates, such as army officers, diplomats and other officials, but clarified that the procedure was suspended during a meeting between Prime Minister Roble and state leaders.

“We will hold six seats up for grabs. Some seats are more compact and simpler than before. Delegates are ready and the work is well under way. The other two former MPs will join six,” said committee spokesman Ahmed Safiina.
