Somali government talks with Zambia about illegal arrests of Somalis

In late October, Zambian police had began arresting Somali citizens in which had caused an uproar, with the Somali government expressing serious concerns and disccusing the matter with the Zambian government.

In the coming hours, members of the Somali embassy in Zambia are due to arrive in Ndola, the scene of the operation by the Zambian police, who have illegally arrested a number of Somalis.

A statement from the Somali embassy in Zambia said: “We have held talks with the Zambian government and other relevant authorities, particularly the Immigration Department and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).”

Officials at the Somali embassy in Zambia said they would share with the Somali people a series of meetings with heads of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and called on Somalis living in Ndola to provide more information in what happened and the impact the illegal arrests had within the community.

The Somali government issued a statement on October 29 expressing concern over the arrests of Somalis living in Zambia, saying they would be resolved immediately.
