Somalia Elections: Requirements for Speaker/Deputy released

The committee for the election of the Speaker of the House of the People has recently issued the requirements for the candidates running for the post of Speaker of the House of the People of the 11th Parliament.

One of the requirements set by the commission is that the candidate running for the post must have an ID card issued by the Federal Electoral Commission.

The committee informed the candidates for the Speaker of the House of the People that the registration of the candidates for the Speaker of the House of the People will take place from April 19th to 22nd.

Candidates’ requirements are as follows;

  • Councilor ID (ID Card issued by the Federal Electoral Committee)
  • Application Proof of Candidacy
  • Candidate Biography (CV)
  • Two Pictures
  • Central Bank receipts
  • Promise to abide by election results
  • Candidate registration form
  • Candidate submission form

The move comes after the two houses of parliament unanimously approved the timetable for the speaker and deputy elections, which will go a long way in speeding up the presidential election.

The election of the Speaker of the House of the People will take place on April 27th, while the election of the Speaker of the Upper House is scheduled for April 26th, as approved by today’s meeting.

The two Houses will hold the registration of candidates for Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Upper House on April 19th and 22nd.

Meanwhile, parliament has increased the registration fee for candidates for speaker to $40,000, up from $30,000 in 2016.

There has also been an increase in the registration fee for Deputy Speaker candidates from $20,000 to $15,000.
