Somali Deputy Prime Minister Mahdi Mohamed Guled said the ruling of the International Court of Justice in the maritime dispute between Somalia and Kenya will be issued on October 12, 2021.

Mahdi Guled, a member of the Somali delegation to the case, tweeted, “I am pleased to announce that the ICJ-CIJ will render judgment of the case b/n Somalia v. Kenya on Tuesday 12 October, 2021 @ the Peace Palace.”

The disputed territory covers over 100,000 square kilometers.

The Somali government filed the lawsuit in 2014, during the presidency of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, after all negotiations between the two sides failed.

The final hearing of the case, which took place in March 2021, was boycotted by the Kenyan government after the court rejected Kenya’s request to adjourn the case.

Somalia has repeatedly rejected Kenya’s demand that the dispute be settled out of court and through diplomacy.
