Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Mohamed Abdirizak Mohamud received Turkish Ambassador to Somalia Mehmet Yilmaz in his office today, with the two officials holding an in-depth meeting to discuss strengthening relations between Somalia and Turkey, according to a statement from the ministry.

“The meeting focused on how to work together to raise the level of bilateral cooperation in the areas of economy, trade, culture and tourism, and how to encourage investment and ways to overcome all the challenges & organizing exchanges of business visits between the two sides,” said a statement from the Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The statement added, “Somalia has a strong and long-standing relationship with Turkey based on ancient historical pillars.”

However, the meeting between the Turkish ambassador to Somalia and the foreign minister of Somalia also coincides with the recent increase in complaints from Somalis living in Turkey, who are being deported and have been under strict surveillance by Turkish security.
