Suspect in murder of Sir David Amess named as Ali Harbi Ali

The UK’s media reported that Ali Harbi Ali was the person suspected of stabbing Member of Parliament David Amess to death.

Sky News reports that the arrested suspect, who has not yet been formally charged, is a 25-year-old British citizen of Somali descent. 

We understand that the security services had not previously been familiar with him.

Amess died at the scene of a stabbing on Friday afternoon while he was meeting with constituents.

Earlier on Saturday, police said the murder was an act of terrorism and that the motive could be related to Islamist extremism. 

A Scotland Yard spokesperson announced on Saturday evening that the man had been detained under section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000 and was now being held in a London police station.

Officers from the London police have searched three homes as part of the investigation. One of the searches has already taken place, while the others are in said to be in progress.

 A postmortem examination has taken place today,” the statement added.
