Al-Shabaab militants launched an attack on a police station in Kahda district as well as a government base in Dar es Salaam last night.

The first major attack targeted a police station in Kahda district, and al-Shabaab members entered the area.

Al-Shabaab also set fire to parts of the base, and the militants reportedly took two armored vehicles.

The second attack, which began with an explosion, was followed by a gun battle in Dar es Salaam area of Mogadishu, where the deputy security chief of Heliwaa district was reportedly killed and several others were injured.

Meanwhile, Al-Shabaab militants attacked bases from Calamada to Elasha Biyaha, where heavy gunfire was heard, after heavy fighting between government and AMISOM forces.

The security minister said the attacks started at around 1am, pointing out that al-Shabaab had attacked Mogadishu and its outskirts.

Abdullahi Mohamed Nur said security forces have put up a strong resistance, and the government will share the casualties in the coming hours.

However, the attacks were strongly felt throughout the capital, with fears running high among residents.
